'Niger Delta' Militants instigating economic hardship for Nigerians – President Buhari

President Buhari has bemoaned economic crisis plaguing the country, saying the development may not be unconnected with acts of vandalism perpetrated by Niger Delta militants.

Acknowledging that Nigerians were going through hard times, he said no nation can thrive economically in an atmosphere devoid of peace and tranquility.

President Buhari said unlike the Boko Haram sect which was easily identified as a common enemy, the militant groups appears to be uncoordinated in their approach of agitations, going by their factionalisation.

Buhari said this on Friday at a dinner to break the Ramadan fast in company of some party members of the All Progressive Congress (APC) at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Honestly I do not know how many factions the militants are in the Niger Delta compared to the North East where you have the Boko Haram sect.

The technology being deployed by the militants to destroy oil installations is of high technology, the way they can go on high sea and international waters and target oil installations is a national problem and it is affecting development.

I do not think that any insurance company will want to insure installations that will end up being blown up and no banks will want to finance such installations.

Those of you who have friends among the leadership or even the militants themselves should plead with them in the name of God ?Almighty to take it easy.

We need to stabilize to create employment, we need to stabilize the economy because when I think of these problems,I agonise over them.

We are in a very difficult time, so we have to organise ourselves. Anybody that says he has any other country than Nigeria should go out there and see for themselves”.

President also endorsed the Edo State Governorship primary which produced Godwin Obaseki as the APC gubernatorial candidate.

He also said the peaceful conduct of the primaries gave a ray of hope that the country was gradually stabilising politically.

Commended the APC chairman, John Odigie Oyegun for ensuring a hitch free primary in the state, saying he expects similar feat to play out in Ondo State.

Among dignitaries who broke the Ramadan fast with the President are former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, APC chieftain George Moghalu, National Organising Secretary of APC, Senator Osita Izunaso, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, former Speaker, House of Representatives, Ghali Umar N’abba among others.
