Omoni Oboli: The most important things in my life

Nollywood actress and producer Omoni Oboli, who was recently awarded a Pacesetters Awards by the Film Video Producers and Marketers Association of Nigeria, at the Investiture Awards 2016, held at the Rockview Hotel, Festac Town, speaks with DUPE AYINLA-OLASUNKANMI on what makes the award special and different from others.

"YOU have won many awards in the past, what makes this one different?"

This is quite different because it’s from the Film Video Producers and Marketers Association of Nigeria, which I am also a member, knowing full well that without them Nollywood will not be where it is today. From day one, they have been behind Nollywood; pushing with their work, and knowing well that it is going to get better as time goes on.

And then recognising a very young producer like me, I still count myself to be young in this field. And to think that I am a Pacesetter; for me that is a huge honour. And I wasn’t supposed to be in this country, but I had to stay back to receive this particular award. It is major, it is really very big.

"How does the award make you feel?"

The Film Video Producers and Marketers Association of Nigeria honoured me with the Pacesetters award. Who would have thought that little I would be recognised by the founders and the pillars of this industry? Whatever you find to do, do it with diligence! I don’t joke with my work; I give it 110% of me! May God bless us all and bring us before great men. Always remember that I love you all

"Your movies are known to have sold out. What inspired them?"

My recent movie, Okafor’s Law, is yet to be released. But for me I base my movies on my everyday experiences, stories that I hear from what people discuss. And then I work on them and make stories out of them.Okafor’s Law, for instance, is something that is widely known in Nigeria. It simply means that if a man has been with a woman before, he will always have access to that woman; that is what the Okafor’s law means.

So I was having a conversation with a group of friends, and I was told that is what it means, and one of them said why don’t you make a movie out of it? And here we are today. It is usually things that happen around me that I base my stories on.

"Why do you run your movies in the cinemas, before going on home videos?"

The cinema is another distribution channel. So what you do when you make a movie is to try and explore other channels. So one of them is the cinema; which is what I do.

"Being a busy person, how do you combine both work and home?"

For me, I have always known the most important things in life; and one of the most import things is my family and they come first. That’s why as an actor, you don’t see me jumping from one set to the other because I have got to have time with my family. There are times that I don’t do anything for months; you will only see me marketing my movies online and other channels. You will not actively see me on movie sets. That is because I plan to have quality time with my family.

"Could that be related to why you took a break years back?"

That was after graduation. I got married right after university and started having kids. So it was not like I went for any special trying.

Our Story Re-post Nobody Is A Mistake -- 'Aki And Paw paw'

Take us Chinedu And Osita aka Aki And Paw paw for example.

During our school days starting from primary to higher institution Most people looked at us as worthless beings because of our look/statue, small and short. Even those we were better than in terms of brain never took us as anything.

Some used to say to our faces "Even you have first class nobody will employ you little rats to work in his office" They forget that God does think the way humans do.

Look at us today, we can enter where those tall and huge people can not enter, We dine with Kings and Queens, Our present makes people happy, we now offer jobs to those who never saw something good in us. Those who looked down on US now look up to US.

The Lord is good, all the time. If we could make it you too can make it. Dont lose hope my brothers/sisters because God created us all for good reasons. There is something special in you that is not in others.
These prayer are for those that can type amen and believe in God and themselves.
God shall turn every disadvantages in your life to Advantages Those who look down on you today shall look up to What no man has ever gotten in your family, you will be the first to get.
Kings and Queens shall beg to dine with you.
You shall give to nations.
Your name shall bring happiness to people.
You shall not die young/ you must live to fulfill the purpose
God sent you to fulfill in this world.
Only Those who believe in God and themselves should type
AMEN to claim these prayers.

If you dont Believe in God and yourself you can skip. Share with friends.

Prostitutes Protest Abuse Policemen.

Community based organization of sex workers, Ohotu Diamond Women Initiative (ODWI) has called on the Nigerian Police to stop abuse on sex workers.

In a statement made available to newsmen, the organization laments over the widely misunderstanding status about sex work.
“The illegal status of sex work in most countries, including Nigeria has not eradicated prostitution.

Instead, criminalization has increased sex workers vulnerability to human rights abuses and created fertile ground for police exploitation, especially of brothel and street-based sex workers.

“Sex workers deserve the basic respect and protection from violence that each nation owes its citizens. But in many settings, police abuse of sex workers receives scant public attention despite its entrenched global reality. Street and brothel-based female sex workers, one of Lagos and Abuja most vulnerable populations, find themselves targeted for arrest by police, and they experience high levels of violence that go unpunished.

Current city and law enforcement policies towards sex workers create a cycle of arrest that does not result in appropriate or long term solutions for the community or sex workers,” the statement reads in part.

On the challenges sex workers face, it said: “The challenge that we face as 50 participants from different L.G.As are almost similar. Many of us face violence and discrimination on a regular basis. Regardless of which State or tribe we are from, many of us have experienced being raped, verbally, emotionally and physically abused by police, clients and community members.

“There is an unfair discrimination from service providers. Sex workers are not protected or defended by the law when they are exploited and abused. We demand that these violations stop immediately and decisive action is taken against perpetrators.”

This statement further revealed how sex workers suffer abuse from the Nigerian Police Officers. “Thirty percent of sex workers interviewed told researchers that they had been threatened with violence by police officers, while 27% actually experienced violence at the hands of police.

They reported incidents included officers physically grabbing and kicking, as well as beating them; one incident of rape; one woman was stalked by a police officer; and throwing food at one subject.

Sexual harassment included fondling of body parts; giving women cigarettes in exchange for sex; and police offering not to arrest sex workers in exchange for sexual services.

“Several times the Police have raided our hotels beating, stealing and having sex with us without protection.”
In a bid to curtail the abuses sex workers suffer from Policemen, the Executive Director of SafeHeaven Development Initiative, Margaret Onah has criticised the method of which Policemen uses to extort money from sex workers and abuse.

According to Onah, the Nigerian Policemen are not mindful of the fundamental human rights that should be accorded to sex workers.

“It is dehumanising when Policemen abuses, sex workers the way they do. We are using this channel to voice out our pains in the course of survival. The government needs to do something about it.

It is better if sex workers are charged to court than naming them, harassing them, stealing their money, stealing their properties, and having sex with them unprotected.”

Speaking on what could be done to end the abuse by Policemen, she said: “the Police needs to re-strategise. The fact that sex work is illegal doesn’t mean that they should kill anyone find doing the job.

“Sex workers are citizen of this country first of all, and they need to be respected like every other citizen.”

Speaking on harassment faced with Policemen, Esther Eghosa said: “Time without numbers, the Policemen break our doors to start packing us like goats to the station. If you don’t have money to bail yourself, they will say they want to sleep with you unprotected which is very bad.

Eghosa, who is a sex worker further stress, “As a woman in the brothel, we protect ourselves, we use condoms, but with the Policemen, you don’t have a say.”

A lady of 26-years old who lives with her step-mother for the past 22-years always pass her University examination but will never be promoted. She has been in level 100 for the past three-years.

In the last Friday night on her way home from church, she met this old beggar & dropped $1.00 in her bowl.
The old woman told the girl to take all the money in her bowl & buy her step-mother a White cloth as a gift. Inside the bowl the girl saw a thick tall fair young woman's picture. She told the old lady the woman in the picture is
very beautiful & wish to meet her one day.
The old lady replies"Blood is thicker than water" & left.

The girl did everything the old lady told her.
The next Monday in class, the head master came to the class & told her she is not suppose to be in that class. She is supposed to be in Level 300 this year.

The head master took her to his office, gave her money to buy her books & walked her into her level 300 class. When she got home, she saw her step-mum dead lying down beside her the picture she saw in the old lady's bowl.
She asked her dad, her dad told him that lady is her dead mum.
Her dad told her the step-mother was the cause of her misfortune in school, the cause of her mother's death & the spells she placed on him not to love her.

She used her womb to do all this things. After the death of the step-mother, everything went back to normal.

Chika Ike is a Nollywood actress who has enjoyed prominence and mainstream appeal over the years.

The 30-year-old actress left her marriage in July, 2013 citing domestic abuse which led to a miscarriage among other things.

Here’s an excerpt of what she shared to the world in defense after it was speculated several times that she married for money:

“The past three years has been a very emotional period for me, I focused my energy on work and to build back my self-esteem.

“It’s been really hard for me to come out straight and talk about this because sometimes, I pinch myself to wake up and not believe that I was a victim of domestic violence. I’ve been through a lot in my life, faced a lot of challenges but this is one topic I’ve tried so hard to avoid and have been waiting for the right time but I have come to a resolve that there’s really no right time because every second of the day, lives are being lost due to domestic violence.

“I was a victim of domestic violence in my marriage and that was the singular reason I left my marriage, aside other reasons.

relationships and for once no man had ever laid a finger on me.

The first time it happened in my marriage I didn’t understand it because I am not the type of woman a man beats but I guess there are no types.

“It just happens and no woman deserves it. As a young girl I thought it was love or his way of expressing his emotions, after every beating he pleads , cries and says it won’t happen again, once again I thought it was love and made excuses for him.

“Over the years when it kept happening consistently, I started looking for other definitions for it. I started loosing my self pride, self esteem, self worth, and most painfully I lost a pregnancy

(Miscarriage). I almost lost my life in the process then I realised how serious and abnormal it really was.

“I have heard and read a lot of accusations from ignorant people who don’t know my story, I guess that’s why they are ignorant. I was 20 yrs old and very naive to the world when I got married .

‘They said I married for money’ LOL. I was married to a corporate guy, who had a 9 to 5 job in a bank, lives in a rented 2 bedroom apartment at [Ikotun,] Egbe.”

The Robber and Bank Manager “Knowledge is worth as much as Gold!”

During a robbery, the bank robber shouted to everyone in the bank: “Don’t move. The money belongs to the State. Your life belongs to you.” Everyone in the bank laid down quietly.

This is called “Mind Changing Concept” Changing the conventional way of thinking.

When a lady lay on the table provocatively, the robber shouted at her: “Please be civilized! This is a robbery and not a rape!” This is called “Being Professional” Focus only on what you are trained to do!

When the bank robbers returned home, the younger robber (MBA-trained) told the older robber (who has only completed Year 6 in primary school): “Big brother, let’s count how much we got.” The older robber rebutted and said: “You are very stupid.

There is so much money it will take us a long time to count. Tonight, the TV news will tell us how much we robbed from the bank!” This is called “Experience.” Nowadays, experience is more important than paper qualifications!

After the robbers had left, the bank manager told the bank supervisor to call the police quickly. But the supervisor said to him: “Wait! Let us take out $10 million from the bank for ourselves and add it to the $70 million that we have previously embezzled from the bank”.

This is called “Swim with the tide.” Converting an unfavorable situation to your advantage!
The supervisor says: “It will be good if there is a robbery every month.” This is called “Killing Boredom.” Personal Happiness is more important than your job. The next day, the TV news reported that $100 million was taken from the bank.

The robbers counted and counted and counted, but they could only count $20 million. The robbers were very angry and complained: “We risked our lives and only took $20 million. The bank manager took $80 million with a snap of his fingers.

It looks like it is better to be educated than to be a thief!” This is called “Knowledge is worth as much as gold!”

The bank manager was smiling and happy because his losses in the share market are now covered by this robbery.

This is called “Seizing the opportunity.” Daring to take risks! So who are the real robbers here?
