Eighty Waiting Trail Inmates Freed In Delta

The no fewer than eighty awaiting trail inmates were yesterday freed from five prisons across Delta State by the State Chief Judge, Justice Marshal Umukoro.

They expected, the State Chief Judge had at the end of his prisons’ visitation, frowned at unnecessary delay of cases by courts, especially cases of awaiting trails, and warned that his tenure as Chief Judge will not condone such delay in court proceedings.

The Justice Umukoro who had at the five prisons’ visitation (Sapele, remand home Sapele, Warri prisons, Agbor prisons, Kwale prisons) also granted bail to 44 persons and five inmates referred to hospital for medical treatment, identified the breakdown of family values as the reason why many youths have been put behind the bars, insisting that from the analysis of inmates, most of them came from broken homes, while others without parents.

He described the increasing rate of youths in crime as terrible, saying that many youths might be jailed for lack of moral values, a situation they consistently indulge in crimes.

The Justice Umukoro noted unnecessary delay in court proceedings as major issues responsible for the pile up cases, and called on Judges/Magistrates to speedy dispensation of cases.

He disclosed that 2770 cases involving kidnapping, armed robbery, rape, murder unlawful carnal knowledge, advance fee fraud (419) breaking and entry, others were reviewed under the periods of his visitation to prisons.

Those set free were awaiting trail inmates who had over stayed in the prisons for over ten years and within no case to answer as recommended by Director of Public Persecution (DPP).

Meanwhile the thirty-two police officers of the state police command were on Thursday promoted and decorated with new ranks.

Mr. Zanna Mohammed Ibrahim, police Commissioner of the state who performed the decoration of the newly promoted, warned them to avoid corruption and embrace change as the command will sanction any erring
